Healthcare under the next president.

Wow...I wonder if McCain knows how much health insurance actually costs? I mean, sure, it's not anywhere near a payment on a $500,000 American Express bill but still. DeWitte boss changes our plan at least three times a year trying to get a better deal..he has a hard time finding one (But he sure try's awfully fricken' hard..damn accountants.). I don't think we could pay it out of pocket ourselves, if we had to and DeWitte makes pretty good money.
Interesting comparison. Universal Health Care is a subject dear to my heart, as I am a strong advocate of our system here in Oz. I have previously posted on the issue here, and created a Universal Health Care group for anyone who is interested.
[this is good]
Here's the basic problem with health care: when I was working full time, I made good money, and I'd have been able to pay for my own health insurance. Thanks to my employers, I only had to pay $34 twice a month. When I got laid-off, even with COBRA, I had to pay $420 a month for the same coverage. The difference, of course, was that I could NOT afford it, not easily, anyway. I still managed to pay it, and thank God I did--the bills from my Christmastide hospital stay were over $250,000. Making individuals pay on their own is going to screw most individuals, who won't be able to afford good policies.
Can you post a link to it, Snowy??? :)
I've considered this issue a little bit and I believe an intelligently constructed two-tier system would work. Here in Canada we have public healthcare, but waiting lists are long, and the bureaucracy smothers things. I don't have the actual figures but there are literally 3 administrators for every doctor up here. That's a lot of money wasted. I think offering a public health care option is important, however I think there should also be a private system to balance it. This way you mitigate the wastefulness an unchecked bureaucracy causes, and competition makes it so that corporations will charge competitive prices for drugs and services in order to make the most money by enticing the most people.
Fully individualizing health care will never be possible at our current state - I hope that this article gets to a lot of people and fast. People will have to start choosing between a house payment or a insurance bill :(
The Australian system is a mix of both public and private, and by and large, I think we have the best of both worlds in that the public system offers free medical and hospital care to all in public hospitals, but you can take out government subsidised private health insurance which allows treatment at private hospitals if you so choose. Mine costs AUD$236 a month.
